Carbon Offsets
I finally got around to buying carbon offsets for my trip to Beth and Chad's wedding in PA back in February. Here is my fancy new certificate (yes it's digital only - no paper). It was supposed to read "Erik Maziarz Photography", but you get the idea. My purchase will offset the equivalent of 2 tons of carbon - more than adequate for my 400+ miles of driving.

thats cool - what was involved with that?
Cool and inexpensive. I used Carbon Fund because they are non-profit, but there are a bunch of companies offering similar offsets/credits. Go to www.carbonfund.org and click on Offset Your Footprint to choose a donation amount. They show the current cost per ton on their main page. You can also use their calculators to figure out the carbon footprint for your vehicle, house, plane flights, etc. (no this is not a paid advertisement)
how much does something like that typically cost?
$5.50/Ton right now. So for example my SUV produces just over 10 tons of CO2 per year, and it would cost me $55 to offset that for 1 year.
How exactly does it offset the polution? I know, I could just go to the site, but I'm lazy, haha. Sounds like a worthwhile investment.
They invest money in 3 different areas: renewable energy, energy efficiency, and reforestation. When you buy offsets, you can choose which areas you'd like to invest in.
